Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Claire Byrne, he said that crisis "first emerged into the public last October when an initial attempt by the CRU [Commission for Regulation of Utilities] and Eirgrid to bring emergency generation to Ireland failed, and people were surprised because nobody had ever told them or shared with them that renewable energy needs to be backed up by gas fired generation."

He said that it was clear that a shortage of supply was on the horizon, but the issue was "ignored" and it was "hoped that it would go away".
"We are completely dependent on the Corrib gas field. We are completely dependent on the UK market," he added.
