Процесс создания новой версии Windows Vista (Longhorn) принципиально отличался от работы над всеми предыдущими версиями операционной системы Windows. Наработанная за десятки лет практика дала сбой, процесс создания новой версии затягивался, обнаруживались всё новые проблемы, программные ошибки не могли обнаружить неделями, Билл Гейтс рвал и метал, проект под названием «Longhorn» грозился рассыпаться.

они вроде как заявили что новый командный интерпретер в первый релиз висты входить не будет.

Может быть переименовать тему на что-то вроде "Windows Vista"? Я думаю, интерес к ней будет возрастать

.NET Code Ratio in Longhorn (the future of .NET ??)

In a classic example of "Do as I say, not as I do", Richard Grimes
analyses the ratio of native to managed code in Microsoft's upcoming Vista
Operating System. According to the analysis at Microsoft Vista and .NET,
"Microsoft appears to have concentrated their development effort in Vista
on native code development. Vista has no services implemented in .NET and
Windows Explorer does not host the runtime, which means that the Vista
desktop shell is not based on the .NET runtime. The only conclusion that
can be made from these results is that between PDC 2003 and the release of
Vista Beta 1 Microsoft has decided that it is better to use native code
for the operating system, than to use the .NET framework.

M'soft Vista delay shock for PC makers

Microsoft's decision to delay the release of its new operating
system until January 2007 is bad news for PC makers, according to
tech investors.

In a surprise statement released late yesterday, the software
giant said that while it remains on track to ship the product,
known as Vista, to business users in November, the finished
consumer version won't be available until next year.

Microsoft had previously said the successor to its ubiquitous
Windows system software would be available for both consumer and
corporate customers in the second half of this year.

Most of the world's PCs run on Windows, and some investors have
been betting that the release of Vista - a more powerful version
of the software - would prompt computer users to upgrade to new
machines to take advantage of its features.

Now, however, consumer users will have less of an incentive to
purchase new PCs from Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Gateway and other
hardware makers during the vital Christmas period.

"A lot of people were pinning their hopes on Vista to drive a PC
upgrade cycle this year," said Romeo Dator, co-manager of the
All-American Equity Fund for U.S. Global Investors in San Antonio
