Markets rally after US rescues mortgage giants

World stock markets have rallied on news of the US government's takeover of mortgage agencies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

In Europe stocks opened higher, with the CAC in Paris up 4%, the DAX in Frankfurt up 3.1% and London's FTSE up 3.6%.

Earlier today stocks in China, Japan and elsewhere in Asia were up almost 4%.

The federal takeover, announced yesterday by the US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, is one of the biggest bail-outs in US history.

The deal essentially means that any debt issued by Fannie and Freddie will be backed by the US government.
