Migrant Rights Centre Ireland national conference:
"Fair Play: Are fair and decent working conditions for migrant workers possible in a changing labour market?" When: Thursday, 26th March 2009 (10am to 4.30pm, followed by wine reception) Where: All Hallows College, Drumcondra, Dublin 9 This conference organised by Migrant Rights Centre Ireland will bring together key stakeholders to consider the core question of whether fair employment standards for migrant workers are possible, as well as ways of ensuring the rights of migrant workers are promoted. At a time of considerable change in global and local labour markets MRCI believes it is crucial to place a spotlight on what is happening for migrant workers in the workplace globally and locally. The overarching objective of this event is to frame a proactive approach in the pursuit of equal rights for migrant workers in the Irish labour market. In doing so, we aim to provide participants with an opportunity to consider the significant changes taking place in the global labour market, and the implications for the rights of migrant workers in this context. The conference will draw on an array of expertise from the United States, United Kingdom and Ireland, from local campaigners to trade unions, business representatives and State agencies. We aim to allow a significant space for discussion at this event, through question & answer sessions as well as panel discussion. Cathal Mac Coille, presenter of RTÉ Radio’s Morning Ireland news programme, will chair the morning session. The keynote address will be given by Paul Mason, BBC Newsnight’s Economics editor and author of Live Working or Die Fighting: How the working class went global", an analysis of the global labour movement. The keynote address in the afternoon session will be given by Janice Fine, Assistant Professor, Labor studies and employment relations at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA, who has written extensively about the labour movement and community organising, including Worker centers: Organizing communities at the edge of the dream. Conference Rates: NGO E30 / Non NGO E50 Early registration rate: NGO E20 / Non NGO E40 (Wednesday 11th March) Registration forms available at www.mrci.ie/news_events/index.htm <http://www.mrci.ie/news_events/index.htm> .
