At least 27 people - including 18 young children - have reportedly been killed in one of the worst school shootings in US history.

The death toll at Sandy Hook Elementary School , is believed to include the school principal, teachers, and up to 22 young pupils.

The gunman - reportedly masked and heavily armed - has been named by US media as 24-year-old Ryan Lanza.

There are reports that he used a .223-calibre rifle.

A police official says a 20-year-old man is in custody and CBS news is reporting that a body has been found at an address linked to the gunman.

It is understood the dead person may be his father, and that his mother, who was a teacher, worked at the school and was also killed.

There are unconfirmed reports that Lanza's younger brother is in police custody.
