Russia one of our oldest friends
...
The importance of Russia as a new and emerging market for Irish goods and services cannot be underestimated, and all links between our two nations should be greatly facilitated.
It should be remembered that Russia was the only country to recognise the Irish Declaration of Independence on January 21, 1919.
For this, we owe Russia a tremendous debt of gratitude.
As a cordial gesture, and as a sign of our gratitude and respect for Russia, I suggest that the Government gives serious consideration to removing the requirement for Russians to obtain visas when visiting Ireland.
Such a gesture would greatly facilitate much-needed inward investment from Russia to Ireland, and I have no doubt that it would be reciprocated in kind by Russia.
