Cameras to focus on dole claimants

PLANS to install cameras in dole offices as part of a drive to streamline payments and stamp out fraudulent claims have been unveiled by Social Protection Minister Éamon Ó Cuív.
Up to 120 facial image capture software systems with cameras and webcams will be used by local offices under the initiative.
The department is also finalising plans for a nationwide public services card, which will hold images of welfare recipients taken by the office cameras.

Civil liberties groups have already raised concerns that information being sought for the card could form the basis of a national identity card.
The Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU), whose members work in public welfare agencies, said it had not been informed by the department about cameras being used to capture images of dole recipients in local offices.
