Unemployment falls to 7.8% in May - CSO

The level of joblessness continued to fall in May as the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 7.8% from April's rate of 7.9%.

The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted number of unemployed stood at 169,700 in May, down 1,500 from April.

It also marked a fall of 38,300 compared to the same month last year.

The Irish jobless rate compares with a current euro zone average of 10.2% and is the lowest level since the end of 2008.

Today's CSO figures show that the male unemployment rate fell to 9.2% in May from 10.9% the same time last year.

The female jobless rate was at 6.2%, down from 8.1% in May 2015.

Youth unemployment was also lower in May, easing to 15% from 15.3% in April

Ireland rises to 7th in World Competitiveness ranking

Ireland has risen nine places to seventh out of 61 countries in the 2016 IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook.

The IMD survey is a closely watched report published by the Swiss business school since 1989.

It compares countries based on both statistics available from a range of domestic and international sources and a survey of global executives.

It ranked Ireland first for growth in GDP or annual economic output, flexibility and adaptability of people and finance skills.

Meanwhile, the US lost its status as the world's most competitive economy as it was overtaken by China Hong Kong and Switzerland.

Travel software firm Datalex creating 100 jobs in Dublin

he new positions are part of 200 jobs announced across the company’s global divisions.

The 100 Irish-based roles will be filled at Datalex’s newly renovated offices in East Point Business Park, Dublin.

The remaining posts will be created worldwide, including China, the US and Britain.

Datalex Chief Executive Officer Aidan Brogan, said: "This is an exciting time of growth for our business. In response to the significant global demand for our digital commerce platform, we are looking for the very best talent to deliver the next evolution of digital travel commerce.

Ryanair's May passenger numbers fly 12% higher

Ryanair has reported another rise in monthly passenger figures despite the ongoing disruptions caused by the air traffic control strikes in France.

The airline said its passenger numbers for May rose by 12% to 10.6 million from 9.5 million the same time last year.

Its load factor - or how many seats it fills on each flight - was also higher, moving up to 94% in May of this year compared to 92% in May 2015.

Exchequer returns for May show the Government has collected almost €19bn in tax revenue in the first five months of the year, an increase of €1.5bn on the same period last year, and some €744m ahead of target.

Argos reports best quarter in two years

Home Retail's Argos has reported its best quarterly sales performance in two years,
Argos said television sales bounced back after a tough year thanks to this month's Euro 2016 football championship as well as strong sales of 4K TVs as households upgrade to the new technology.

It said best-sellers during its first quarter also included mobile phones, computers and tablets, while the group saw strong demand for furniture and sports goods.

Mobile workforce solutions provider Fleetmatics is creating 75 new jobs in research and development at its new Tallaght headquarters in Dublin over the next 18 months.

It will bring employee numbers here to over 200 and over 1,200 worldwide.

More tourists coming to Ireland - and for a longer time

New figures show that the Irish tourism industry continues to grow as more people come here and spend more time and money while they are here.

The Central Statistics Office figures show that the number of visitors coming to Ireland - on holidays, for business and to visit family and friends - rose by 16.6% in the first three months of the year.

The number of overseas trips made here increased from 1.531 million in the first quarter of last year to 1.785 million in the first quarter of this year.

Today's CSO figures also show that the number of nights spent in Ireland by overseas travellers rose by 16.2%, increasing from 10 nights in the first three months of last year to 11.6 nights in the first three months of this year.

The amount of money spent by both tourists and business travellers to Ireland increased by 18.7%, rising from €780m to €926m
