The Localisation Research Centre (LRC), Department of Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS), University of Limerick (UL) is looking for applications for nine funded PhD positions in:

Multilingual Digital Content Development (2 Positions)
Standards
Guidelines
Digital Content Translation and Adaptation Technologies (2 Positions)
Engineering Technologies for Localisation
Process Technologies for Localisation
Localisation Process and Workflow Automation (5 Positions)
Integration of Translation Technologies
Integration of Quality Assurance (QA) Technologies
Localisation Process Description (Enterprise Localisation)
Localisation Process Description (Personal Localisation)
Process Technologies Integration

Starting date : first half of 2008
Closing date: 31 December 2008
Stipend p.a.: 16,000 euro (fees, travel and additional costs will be covered separately)

Ideal candidates have a strong background in the corresponding fields of research, particularly in Localisation Tools Technologies and Process, Translation Studies, Evaluation, Process Analysis, Design and Implementation, and Computer Science. They will be expected to take on a reasonable amount of teaching and tutoring as determined by the Director LRC and contribute to the activities of the LRC. The successful candidates will have to work as part of a large research team and will be need to demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills.

The positions are part of a large research project “Next Generation Localisation” involving a consortium of leading Irish Universities (DCU, TCD, UCD and UL) and Industry Partners, funded by the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI). The project focuses on Language Technology and Digital Content Management in Localisation. Localisation is the industrial-scale adaptation of digital content to domain, culture and language.

The University of Limerick (UL) with over 11,500 students and 1,200 staff is a young, energetic and enterprising university with a proud record of innovation in education and excellence in research and scholarship. The Localisation Research Centre (LRC) was established in 1995 and is Europe’s only research centre dedicated to localisation. The LRC has been involved in a number of large research project, funded by industry as well as Irish and EU funding agencies. It has a large industrial advisory board and is proud of its long-standing collaboration with the localisation industry in Ireland and abroad. The LRC organises an annual conference, it offers the most prestigious annual academic research awards world-wide in collaboration with industrial partners and it published the only academic journal dedicated to localisation, Localisation Focus.
