Tax figures show ?1,427m deficit
The Government finances recorded a deficit of ?1,427m in the first half of 2007, according to the latest Exchequer figures.

The Department of Finance had forecast an overall deficit for the year of ?547m.

It believes accelerated spending on capital projects and the National Development Plan is responsible for the much of the deficit.

However, it expects that the deficit will be lower by December, due to an influx of taxes towards the end of the year.

VAT and income tax are broadly on target. VAT amounted to ?7,279m in June, with income tax bringing in ?5,973m. Corporation Tax raised ?1,557m - ?173m ahead of target.

However, excise duties were ?155m behind Department forecasts at ?2,895m. This is largely due to lower than expected car sales.

Capital Gains Tax is also down on forecasts, raising ?1,046m in the first six months of the year. Stamp Duty brought in ?1,696m, which was ?97m below Government expectations.

500 jobs a week are being axed

Almost 13.000 people lost their jobs in the last six months, business bosses revealed yesterday.
On average, 500 Irish positions are being axed every week, according to Small Firms Association (SFA).
Men make up more then 60 per cent of the cuts, while Dublin is the worst county affected, standing at 41 per cent (5,206) of the national figure.
SFA assistant director Avine McNally said: "The cumulative job losses over the past five years was 122.082, equating to an average loss of 25.000 jobs per annum." She added that 2007 "is set to be one of the worst years for job losses to date, with redundancies currently running 10.4 per cent higher than 2006 in the first six months of the year.
"The economy is losing, on average, 500 jobs every week, which is twice the level of redundancies recorded in 2000."
The services sector was one of the worst hit, with 4.616 positions shed since January, accounting for 36 per cent of the overall total losses.
Nearly 30 per cent of jobs have been cut in manufacturing, with 3.792 axed.
Ms McNally said the latest statistics were worrying in the wake of the SFA's national employment survey, which predicted few positions would be created by small business sector this year.
"The SFA survey results are the worst on record", she said. "For the third successive year, small companies will create fewer new jobs than the previous year.
"While they will create 7.787 new jobs in 2007, the corresponding figure in 2006 was 50.243 and 61.003 in 2005."
She added high inflation, labour costs and the price of electricity and gas, and local authority charges are affecting the ability of Irish business to create jobs.

это я тоже сегодня в местных газетенках прочитал. просто непонятно, какого же соотношение увольнений к приему на работу? то есть уволили 500 в неделю, а сколько наняли?
