Evacuees return home after Coombe blast

Residents evacuated following an explosion in Dublin's south inner city overnight are returning to their homes.

Up to 100 homes were evacuated following a suspected pipe-bomb explosion.

The blast occurred at Spitalfield near Dean Street in the Coombe area shortly before midnight.

AdvertisementGardaí say a caller to the Samaritans claimed a bag had been abandoned close to the area where the device went off.

Officers at the scene discovered a bag and the area was immediately cordoned off.

Between 75 and 100 homes in the vicinity were evacuated and the Army Disposal Unit was called in to carry out a detailed examination of the bag.

The Garda Press Office says residents who spent several hours out of their homes overnight are now being allowed to return.

Francis Street, which had been closed, has now reopened to motorists in the city but some minor roads around

The evacuation of 100 people from their homes in Dublin overnight was due to a grenade explosion.

The explosion was previously thought to have been made by a pipe bomb, but the Army says the blast was caused by a suspected grenade.

The attack is believed to be linked to an ongoing feud which reportedly involves a man with connections to the INLA.
Around 100 people were evacuated from their homes after a device was thrown at a house near an apartment block on Park Terrace Street in the Coombe just before midnight.

It caused minor damage but no injuries.

Gardaí decided to evacuate a number of nearby homes after being told there were a number of other devices on the street.

After several hours of searching, no more bombs were found, but a controlled explosion was carried out on a suspect bag in the car park of the Carman's Court apartment complex which turned out to pose no threat.

Residents were subsequently allowed to return to their homes at around 6am.

Gardaí in Dublin are investigating a suspected grenade attack on a house in the south of the city overnight.
The device was thrown at a house in the Slane Road area of Crumlin just after 11pm, causing some damage to the property.

The building was empty at the time and nobody was injured.

Army bomb disposal experts were called to the scene, which remains sealed off for technical examination this morning.

It is unclear at this stage whether the incident was linked with another suspected grenade attack on a house in the Coombe area earlier this week.
