A 51-year-old Russian man remains critically ill in hospital after being found unconscious in a garda cell following his arrest in Cork early yesterday.

The man is said to be suffering from serious head injuries and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his condition is underway.

A Garda Superintendent from outside the division has been appointed to investigate the incident.

The man was arrested on Victoria Cross Rd in the city following a report of criminal damage. He was put in a cell at Togher Garda Station at 7.05am. An hour later he was discovered in an unconscious state.
