Ex-addict in ?17,000 Malaysia benefits fraud avoids prison

A man who fraudulently lived off disability benefits for almost two years in Malaysia where he quit drugs, got married and started a family has been given suspended jail terms totalling 12 months.

Raymond Pullen (31), of Ringsend, had pleaded guilty at Dublin District Court to 21 sample charges for the theft of nearly ?17,000 from the Department of Social Protection over 91 weeks from September 2010 until June 2012.

Judge William Early noted that it was Pullen's first offence, and a guilty plea had been entered at an early stage.

The judge had earlier said: "There are taxpayers the length and breadth of the country working hard to keep Mr Pullen in Malaysia for two years."
