Civil servant 'leaked personal details to criminal'

Concerns are being raised this morning about the security of personal and financial information in the possession of the civil service.

The concerns follow the revelation that a man who worked for the Department of Social and Family Affairs had passed on such information to his criminal brother.

The details were then used to burgle one man and to extort money from three others.

The civil servant in question had access to people's PPS numbers and details of their earnings.

He reportedly told investigators that it was common practice among civil servants to use their privileges to check up on the financial status of friends, family and acquaintances.
